How To Clean A Down Jacket
A down jacket is insulated with the soft and warm under feathers from duck or geese. Along with this, a down jacket is constructed with heavy-duty nylon, making them waterproof and extra insulated during harsh conditions.
However, you may not realized that overtime, durable fabrics deteriorate over time if not taken care of in the proper manner and kept clean. Just like a cellphone, think of your jackets as an investment. If you don’t treat it with care and caution, even a quality jacket without the proper care and maintenance will eventually break down overtime.
Washing Your Jacket
Believe it or not, washing a down jacket is not much harder than washing a pair of jeans. There are 3 things you’ll need to wash your jacket. 1) Down soap, 2) A front load washer & 3) A dryer with reliably low heat. While you can use regular detergents to wash your jackets, they can strip away the natural oils in down and don’t always rinse out cleanly. So, it’s recommend using a cleaner specifically designed for cleaning down.
If your garment has really dirty spots such as the neck or cuffs, you can spray fabric stain remover on these areas before washing. Also, if your jacket is really dirty you can also stop the washer mid-wash for a hour or so to let the jacket soak. To ensure all residual soap becomes rinsed out completely, run it through an additional wash cycle with no soap at all.
Now comes the important part, drying it. Drying is a slow process so prepare yourself to spend some extra time on this step. It’s also a delicate step due to the fact that high heat can ruin your jacket. On a home dryer, a low heat setting works best. If you prefer to air dry your jacket, lay it flat on a towel in a warm dry spot out of direct sunlight exposure. Be sure to flip the jacket over occasionally to ensure all parts are becoming dry.
Can I Dry Clean My Jacket?
It’s certainly not imperative to dry clean every type of down jacket. However, it without a doubt will save you a ton of time and energy. Machine-washing jackets at home is a time consuming and tedious process, often requiring multiple runs through the dryer and multiple hours to air dry.
Having your jackets undergo professionally dry cleaning ensures that your investments protected and secured. Machine-washing your expensive jackets such as a Canada Goose or Neiman Marcus jacket will actually void the jacket’s lifetime warranty, which is a very important thing to consider. Bringing your jacket to a reputable dry cleaners with a gentle, yet thorough cleaning process will give you the peace of mind of knowing that your jacket is in safe hands and will undergo care and cleaning in the best possible way.
